Description
This assassin bug, Apiomerus spissipes, had caught a beetle in the genus Acmaeodera and had plunged a sword-like appendage into its prey to extract nutrients. It's a brutal world out there. I came across this ghastly sight on the underside of a Texas thistle when I got close to take a photograph of the flower.

By coincidence a commenter from New Zealand mentioned Bear Grylls on my nature photography blog this morning.

Steven Schwartzman replied:
Thanks. I was in the right place at the right time for this one. I'd stopped to photograph the thistle and found a drama going on.
