Something so simple that is made to look so good by the eye of a artist, great work Steven!!! L/F

Thanks, Marvin. In many cases a close look can make a big difference, and that's the case with milkweeds.

Lisabeth Billingsley

Lisabeth Billingsley

Hello, your photos of milkweed are sensational! I was wondering if you have some seeds connected to fluff you can sell me? I am an artist and want some for a collage. Thank you, Lisabeth. Waterfront235@gmail.com Please let me know if you have some.

I appreciate your interest, Lisabeth, but I'm not a gardener and haven't gathered seeds of milkweed or any of the other native plants I enjoy photographing.

Fabulous capture! I love that it looks like the milkweed has its own hammock!:)f

Now that you mention it, it does look like a hammock. Now if only a real hammock could stay horizontal when supported at just one end.

Artist's Description

Who isn't fascinated by milkweeds? Here you see the pod of a pearl milkweed vine, Matelea reticulata, that has dried to the point of splitting open and beginning to release its seeds, each of which is attached to some silky fibers that blow easily in the wind.

I took this photograph outdoors with no artificial backdrop. The reason the background is black is that I aimed toward a group of shadowed trees, which by comparison with the brightly sunlit silky fibers came out very dark.

About Steven Schwartzman

Steven Schwartzman

I've been involved with photography since the late 1960s, when I got my first real camera toward the end of my two years in Honduras as a Peace Corps math teacher. From the 1970s through the mid-1980s I went through a phase of black and white infrared photography, often even in 3-D. My current period began in 1999. Call me a nature photographer and you won't be wrong, but because there's not a lot of majestic scenery where I live (which is Austin, Texas), I've gotten interested in portraying the native plants of the region, especially our many wildflowers. Along with them come occasional butterflies, birds, and other small creatures. I often think of all these subjects, even the plants, as if they were posing for portraits, so you could...
