I love the tiny petals! They look like little fingers.

Yes, they do look like little fingers. In addition, I thought of them as the crenels and merlons on the battlement of a castle.

Wonderful detail!

All those soft hairs make a difference, don't they?

Great capture with such exquisite detail. Congrats on your feature. L/f

Thank you. I'm fortunate that this species is common in my area and even grows at the margins of busy streets.

Fantastic portrait of this four-nerve daisy! Love the incredible detail and DOF! V/F

Diminutive four-nerve daisy flower buds are wonderful when they begin to open, aren't they? The shallow depth of field makes the soft hairs on the side stand out all the more.

Artist's Description

This is the downy bud of a four-nerve daisy, Tetraneuris linearifolia, as it begins opening into a flower head. Although this photograph looks like it was shot in a studio or with an artificial background, I took the picture outdoors, using nearby shaded trees as a natural backdrop.

About Steven Schwartzman

Steven Schwartzman

I've been involved with photography since the late 1960s, when I got my first real camera toward the end of my two years in Honduras as a Peace Corps math teacher. From the 1970s through the mid-1980s I went through a phase of black and white infrared photography, often even in 3-D. My current period began in 1999. Call me a nature photographer and you won't be wrong, but because there's not a lot of majestic scenery where I live (which is Austin, Texas), I've gotten interested in portraying the native plants of the region, especially our many wildflowers. Along with them come occasional butterflies, birds, and other small creatures. I often think of all these subjects, even the plants, as if they were posing for portraits, so you could...
